From waveform to pulse
BPM means beats per minute: 120 BPM describes two beats every second. A tempo detector does not understand a song like a musician does. It looks for measurable events that often line up with the beat—kick drums, snares, claps, bass attacks, chord changes, and other sudden rises in energy.
This analyzer mixes the decoded signal to mono, samples a useful portion of the track, and builds an onset envelope from frame-to-frame energy changes. It then checks how strongly that envelope repeats across musically plausible intervals. The best-supported interval becomes the estimated BPM. A confidence score reflects how clearly the winning pulse stands above competing possibilities.
Tempo is sometimes ambiguous. A 70 BPM hip-hop groove can also be counted at 140 BPM; a sparse 128 BPM breakdown may suggest 64. That is not necessarily a detection error—it is a choice of metrical level. The half-time and double-time controls make that choice explicit, while Tap Tempo lets your ears make the final call.
Practical music data
BPM and musical key solve different problems. Tempo describes speed; key describes the tonal center. This first version is a focused BPM analyzer, so it does not guess a key and pretend the answer is certain. For harmonic mixing, use the detected tempo here and confirm key with a dedicated chroma-based key analyzer or your DJ software.
Accurate BPM helps DJs align grids and transitions, producers time-stretch samples, musicians set a metronome, and editors cut visual changes to a pulse. For the cleanest result, analyze a section with steady drums. Tracks with rubato, tempo changes, very soft percussion, or unusual time signatures may need a manual tap check.
